Droid X, iPhone, Seo Software - I'm so confused!

Droid X, iPhone, Seo Software - I'm so confused! Do you find yourself saying things like this every time a new technical gadget or software product rolls off the line? Let's face it. Technology is an ever-evolving industry, and one we can't possibly expect to stay on top of, unless we are either obsessed or our paychecks depend on it. And with things like cell phones, smart phones and wireless data devices, you'll have to always consider the carrier as well when choosing the latest and greatest thing on the market.

The hot new iPhone, for example, was all the rage and had people lined up at stores a few weeks ago to get their hands on one only to find out the reception wasn't all that cracked up. Now they are forced to add these bumpers for better reception. But it's only a temporary fix. Just how long will these ATandT customers be satisfied with this Apple device? Time will tell.

Verizon, not to be outdone, has unleased their version of the coolest smart phone on the planet, Motorola's Droid X. Initial reviews are favorable, noting the long battery life, the unified messaging system, the micro HDMI hookup for HDTV, and the 8 megapixel camera for landscape photos. Drawbacks, however, include the camera's less-than-impressive results with portraits and low-light photos, and the bulge from where the camera is placed in the phone. This model has only been available to the public for a few days, so it's too early to rush out and get one just yet.

Meanwhile, Sprint is touting its HTC EVO 4G, "the first 4G phone", complete with 4G speed, HDMI capabilities, dual cameras, and a mobile hotspot. But hold on... many areas do not even have 3G coverage yet, so make sure you're going to be using this device in a 4G area if you want to get your money's worth when considering this phone.

All these devices seem really great, but the wise thing to do would be wait and see how they are going to really perform before making a decision. Consider the pros and cons, and most definitely research the fine print! Verizon, for example, has an early termination fee of $350 for these fancier devices, as compared with the standard $175 ETF.

And if you are considering a data device and plan, research, research, research. I had been going back and forth between DSL and a wireless modem over the past few months. The more I worked from home, the more data usage I was going through each month, but didn't really notice because I knew my unlimited plan should take care of it. I had decided I liked the idea of using my wireless modem so I could go anywhere and work remotely without being tied to the house. Not realizing my former unlimited plan had been discontinued, when I switched from "stand-by", I was now on what I thought was an unlimited plan, but it had a 5 GIG cap each month. I discovered this when the service just stopped, and I called tech support to find out what the problem was. After speaking with 11 reps over the course of 3 hours (2 hours one night and 1 hour the next morning), the wireless carrier made it abundantly clear my original unlimited plan was not available but agreed to remove the "overage charges" of $286.   In just 3 weeks - not even a full month's service, between my work and my son's Xbox live activities, we had gone over the 5 Gig limit. Bottom line, if you plan to do any heavy data usage each month (live streaming, social media, watching movies online, etc.), you will need a dedicated line, DSL/cable. Truly unlimited wireless data plans are not available. One carrier, Verizon, told me they will only allow customers to go over the cap 2 times, then they cut them off. And when you do get away with continuing to work when you've gone past the cap, you'll be paying dearly. $286 in overages when your month of service is not even up is pretty steep! It could have easily surpassed $500. Incredible!

If you are faced with learning how to stay on top of the game with your company's website, you will be faced with undoubtedly tons of offers and products to optimize your search engine marketing strategies. This area, just like cell phones, tech gadgets, and wireless services is very competitive and ever evolving. Before investing big dollars on a service that promises to keep your website in the top of the search engines, it would be beneficial to explore a few options first. Some SEO experts will expect upwards of $90K to come out and perform an assessment and put a plan of action into place. Some services such as Google Adsense, Pay Per Click, Sponsored listings, etc. can run anywhere from a few hundred bucks each month to several thousand. One company sales person I spoke with offered to do sponsored listings for us in Google and Yahoo, but wanted to charge for each key search term. Now how often do you think people take those sponsored listings seriously? By now, most web savvy people can spot those a mile away and look more seriously at the organic listings on the page when looking for a product or service on the internet. There are many strategies and techniques to get your site on the 1st page of search engines like Google and directories like Yahoo. Article marketing, blogging, social media, building backlinks, submitting press releases... it all helps, and it all works together. But these tasks can be very time consuming and laborious. What I have found is that if there exists a software product that can help me accomplish some of these tasks, and it's not going to kill my budget, then that's what I'm after. And that's what I have found. After researching and testing various tools and techniques, I know what works for me, my company and my colleagues. We are maximizing our exposure and at a very low price. In fact, within a free trial test, I could see results the same day and convinced the exutive team at a well established, mid-sized company to give the product a shot. That company is well respected in their local community but needed more exposure on the web to broaden their customer base. Now that company is ranking in the top of Google and Yahoo for common key phrases and making a mark in their industry.

Take away from this: Do your research, consider some of the free trials available before jumping into anything too expensive that you can't get out of, and see what works for your situation.

Until next time, good luck in the ever-changing world of technology!
